Board Members, VCTA Express Concern Over Selection Of New Superintendent

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – Concerns are being expressed by two Vigo County School Board members over how a new school superintendent is being selected.

At Monday night’s Vigo County School Board meeting Board President Jackie Lower confirmed that the board has selected a person for the job, but the name of the individual has not officially been announced.

The last call for public comment at the meeting began with letters addressed to school board members from the Vigo County Teachers Association.

Mark Lee the President of the VCTA said that his group would like more dialogue about the selection.

The board voted unanimously to work with the University Placement Team and use their process for the candidate selection.

Board members Paul Lockhart and Mel Burkes expressed concerns that some groups have been left out of the process.

Those groups according to Burkes are current administrators, the Vigo County Teachers Association and some members of the public.

Board President Jackie Lower said that the board hired University Placement Team and one of their directives was that no one else be involved but the board.

An announcement as to who the board has selected is expected soon.

A public hearing on the new superintendent’s is coming up on May 31st at 5 p.m. at the administration building on Wabash. You can click the link below to see a copy of the public notice of the meeting and a summary of the contract.
