INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  –  Legislation that would allow a casino to be built in Terre Haute is making its way through the state house.

Senate Bill 552 passed two Senate Committees unanimously and will now move on to the full Indiana Senate.

The bill would also legalize sports wagering in Indiana.

The full Senate vote on the bill will happen next week.

The Appropriations Committee also approved Senate Bill 66 which provided economic development help to the lakefront in Gary, where the casinos will soon vacate.

That bill was amended to include a provision that if a license is to be moved out, it will go to Terre Haute.

If the bill passes the Senate, it will then go to the House.

The next step would be a referendum which would need to be supported by local voters.

Even though it has a long way to go, a casino is closer now than it ever has been before.
