City Council Says NO To Rezoning For Jail

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – After a nearly four hour meeting the Terre Haute City Council voted to deny a request from Vigo County Commissioners to rezone the old International Paper property to make way for a new jail.

The vote was 8-1 against rezoning with Councilman Don Morris the only member to vote yes.

The county owns the land, but since it falls in city limits, they needed to ask the city council to rezone the property.

A federal judge told local leaders that the current jail is unconstitutional.

A timeline to build that jail has been filed with the judge in the case but now there is no set place to build it.
