County To Ask City To Rezone Land For Jail

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – The Terre Haute City Council will now have a say on where a new county jail might be located.

A third-party lawyer says the county needs to abide by city rules, so the county has rescinded a request for site variances and is now asking to rezone the property for a penitentiary.

County Commissioners want to site the proposed new jail on the old International Paper property on Prairieton Road which is inside the city limits.

If a jail is to be built at that location, it will need to be rezoned and that requires the City Council to approve.

The council will consider that rezoning request at their meeting on December 6th.

If the city council denies the county’s request for rezoning the county would have to wait at least a year before making the request again. The county could appeal the decision.
