“Dance Ordinance” Topic Of Discussion At Council Meeting

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A Thursday nights Terre Haute City Council meeting the subject of the city’s dance ordinance was a major focus up for discussion.

Now city leaders say they may make some changes the dance permit ordinance.

Some residents say that they were ticketed for having a private party on their property.

Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse and Sergeant Denzil Lewis were also at the meeting to address the council and the public.

Chief Plasse has been quoted as saying that the ordinance was first passed because there were several shootings at parties put on by people from out of town who would rent empty homes, host events, and charge people to attend.

The parties would get out of hand and police would have to step in and try to bring things under control.

Plasse adds the ordinance was modeled after Indianapolis and Bloomington ordinances.

Several residents spoke about confusion as to what residents are required to do by the ordinance and what is not allowed.

Several council members seemed to agree that the ordinance needs adjustment and they will be looking at that.

Police say that there have been thirty-four citations issued and that was after they were called to an event.
