DNA On Cigarette Leads To Arrest Of West Terre Haute Man

SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind – Investigators from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Department recently recovered a single cigarette butt, left behind at the scene of a Carlisle, residential burglary and that has led to an arrest in that crime.

The burglary happened at a residence in the 5900 block of County Road 700 South, which is located between Carlisle and Pleasantville, IN.

Investigators found a shattered door frame, and inside the residence found a heavily damaged gun safe, which had been emptied.

The homeowner said that jewelry, as well as eleven firearms had been stolen from the home.

The next day police found a single cigarette butt on the garage floor, but the residents did not smoke, and believed that it may have been left behind by the burglary suspect.

A DNA analysis was linked to 33 year old Kyle T. Starkey of West Terre Haute.

Sheriff’s investigators interviewed several people and obtained further information, which lead to the recovery of several of the stolen firearms.

Starkey has been charged with Burglary and Theft and is being held on $23,000. bond with no ten percent allowed.

He is currently being held in the White County, IL jail on unrelated federal drug charges and will be transferred back to the Sullivan County Jail when released from federal custody.

Police say that this is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may follow.
