PARIS, Ill. – Officials in Edgar County are making plans to close the county jail.

The county is just in the preliminary stages of this process of closing.

Edgar County’s board and sheriff’s office are considering all options, but closing the jail seems to be the most viable short and long term solution.

The jail facility is 127 years old and is in dire need of renovation which is something that the county can not afford to do.

Edgar County officials are in the process of holding talks with other counties to house their inmates and how much that will cost.  The jail houses fewer than 40 inmates.
