TERRE HAUTE, Ind – The memory of fallen Terre Haute Police Officer Rob Pitts was honored in two ways Thursday.

The Breakfast Optimist Club’s presented Kevin Artz Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award to officer Pitts posthumously.

His daughter, mother and brother accepted the award on his behalf.

The Kevin Artz Memorial Award is named after a Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy who died in the line of duty in the late 1980s.

Thursday night the Terre Haute City Council voted to rename a section of Erie Canal Road between Margaret Drive and East Davis Drive as the “Officer Rob S. Pitts Memorial Way”.

The family reportedly requested that section of roadway since Officer Pitts would travel that section on his way to and from work.

New signage will be paid for through donations and Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse said that he would cover the cost of street crews if necessary.
