TERRE HAUTE, Ind – In a decision handed down Thursday, Federal Chief Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson granted the plaintiff’s request for declaratory relief and officially ordered the replacement of the existing Vigo County Jail.

County officials had already admitted that the jail violated the constitutional rights of inmates and agreed to build a new jail.

The court ordered the county to periodically appear in court and present updates on the project.

The judge ordered that while we wait for the new jail to be build, that sufficient staff be available to ensure that all prisoners are offered a minimum of three hours per week of recreation outside of their cells.

It was also ordered that sufficient staff be made available to ensure the health and safety of inmates.
