TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A Terre Haute man who pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the death of a high school student during a party has been sentenced to four years in prison.
Nathan Derickson was sentenced in Vigo Superior Court Friday.
Derickson was 19 at the time of the shooting of 17-year-old William Garett Sands in March 2018.
Police said Derickson was playing with a gun when it discharged.
Officers found the Terre Haute South Vigo High School student dead at a Terre Haute home where minors were drinking alcohol.
An additional six years will be served on probation after his prison term.
In court Derickson read a statement and apologized to Sands’ family.
Derickson says he’s sworn off alcohol and drugs and added, “I miss Garrett every day.”
