INDIANAPOLIS  — Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has signed a bill allowing a company to go ahead with plans for potentially storing 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide underground in Vigo County.

The carbon dioxide storage is part of a $450 million project proposed by Wabash Valley Resources LLC for an anhydrous ammonia fertilizer plant.

This would be the only site in the state authorized to store carbon dioxide according to the bill. The new law calls for a special legislative committee to review legal and environmental questions before allowing similar projects elsewhere.

The project still needs a federal Environmental Protection Agency permit before work can begin.
