TERRE HAUTE, Ind  –  Ivy Tech Community College’s automotive technology program hosted a free car care workshop for Hamilton Center youth on Wednesday, June 19 at the Ivy Tech automotive lab. Ivy Tech staff taught youth car care basics like changing a tire, checking fluids, and how to perform safety inspections on belts and hoses.

“This is the second time we’ve offered a workshop for the community,” said John Timberman, automotive technology program chair. “In April we held a workshop that was open to the public, so this time we wanted to do something for a community organization.”

The Hamilton Center youth, accompanied by their care managers, also toured the Ivy Tech automotive facility that houses state-of-the-art automotive diagnostic technology.

“This has been a great partnership,” said Stacie Amerman, Hamilton Center program manager. “One of our youth is now saying he wants to attend Ivy Tech and learn more about becoming a mechanic. Another attendee went home and told his parent about how much fun he had and what all he learned. Even the Hamilton Center staff had a great time and learned a lot about car maintenance. Thank you to Ivy Tech for this amazing opportunity, taking your time with our kids, and exposing them to this type of education that they may not have otherwise ever received.”

Napa Auto Parts donated tire pressure gauges for the Hamilton Center youth, and the Hamilton Center provided the engine oil, antifreeze and other supplies needed for the workshop.

Ivy Tech’s automotive technology program is enrolling now for fall classes. The program offers evening classes and part-time scheduling to allow students to earn their degrees while continuing to work.
