INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s homeless veterans are getting CARE packages from the legislature.

The Indiana House picks a different charity each year for a statehouse donation drive. This year’s cause was the American Legion’s efforts to help homeless vets. Legislators ended up gathering about seven-thousand items, enough to fill 250 food kits and 250 hygiene kits.

Legislators took turns Monday assembling the kits. The Legion will deliver them this week to veterans’ centers in Indy, Fort Wayne, Gary and Evansville.

About one in 10 homeless Hoosiers is a veteran — that’s nearly 600 people.
