CHICAGO — Illinois lawmakers are considering raising the state’s gas tax by 19 cents a gallon to pay for transportation infrastructure repairs.

The bill also proposes raising fees for driver’s licenses and vehicle registration.

The hike would be the state’s first gas tax increase since 1990 and raise an additional $2 billion in revenue each year.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the measure was introduced last week by Democratic Sen. Martin Sandoval.
