INDIANAPOLIS  — On Thursday the Indiana House approved a measure that would change how the state schools superintendent would get that job.

Under the new law the position would no longer be elected but appointed by the governor starting in 2020.

Members voted 70-29 largely along party lines.

The Republican dominated legislature voted two years ago to make the change starting in 2025 after numerous policy disagreements with former Democratic Superintendent Glenda Ritz.

Members decided to move up the change when current Superintendent Jennifer McCormick said she would not run for reelection ion 2020.
