Local Students To Compete This Weekend In “MathCounts” At Rose

TERRE HAUTE, Ind – More than 140 students from eight Wabash Valley middle schools will demonstrate their problem-solving skills and love of mathematics while competing for individual and team honors at the regional MATHCOUNTS competition Saturday, Feb. 9, at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

 

Organized by the Indiana Society for Professional Engineers’ Francis Vigo Chapter and Rose-Hulman’s Department of Mathematics, MATHCOUNTS is one of the nation’s largest and most successful education partnerships. It increases academic and professional opportunities for sixth, seventh and eighth-grade students. Each student participates in three rounds of competition: Sprint, testing problem-solving speed; Target, testing general problem-solving skills; and Team, testing teamwork problem-solving abilities.

 

Students competing Saturday will represent Honey Creek Middle School, Greencastle Middle School, Otter Creek Middle School, Saint Patrick School, Sarah Scott Middle School, Terre Haute Christian Home Educators, West Vigo Middle School, and Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

 

The competition schedule is as follows:

Problem-Solving Rounds, Sports and Recreation Center

9:10-9:50 a.m. — Sprint Round

10-10:35 a.m. — Target Round

10:45-11:05 a.m. — Team Round

 

The top three teams and top 17 students will advance to the Indiana MATHCOUNTS competition March 9 at Purdue University.
