VIGO COUNTY, Ind – The Indiana State Police are investigating a Sunday afternoon crash between a passenger vehicle and a semi tractor-trailer near the one-mile marker on westbound Interstate 70.

Police say that traffic was slow in the area due to an earlier accident in Illinois at the 148-mile marker.  Traffic was being diverted off the Interstate at the 154-mile marker which is the first exit inside of Illinois from the Indiana state line.

Just after 2:00 p.m. a semi tractor-trailer driven by 54-year-old Sergiy S. Shadrin, of Newmarket, Ontario, with its hazard lights activated because of slow traffic was hit.

Shadrin said that he felt an impact in the rear of his semi and immediately stopped.

Troopers say that a Jeep failed to slow and slammed into the back of the truck.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for today (Monday 2/24/20) at Regional Hospital in Terre Haute.

At that time a positive identification of the driver of the Jeep will be made.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a contributing factor of the accident.
