Over 72 Animals Removed, Martin County Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty

MARTIN COUNTY, Ind – Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a Loogootee woman on charges of animal neglect and cruelty.

On Thursday, (1/24/19) the Martin County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen reporting an active “puppy mill”.

Around 4:30pm that afternoon, Animal Control Officers and Deputies went to the site at 2779 Rutherford Road in Loogootee and heard dogs barking from various structures on the property and observed several dogs looking outside the windows of the house located on the property.  Officers saw several dogs running in the home and one dead lying on the floor.

After a search warrant was granted, officers discovered several dozen dogs, many of which were locked in feces-covered cages with no food or water, and some of which were already deceased.

In addition to the many dogs located on the property, officers also found other animals, such as horses, mules and donkeys that were neglected.

At last report on Saturday (1/26/19) The Martin County Humane Society had rescued 72 animals from the property.

Police arrested 73 year old Julia K. Arney. Police say that has surrendered possession and all rights of the animals to the Martin County Humane Society

Officers are continuing their investigation.
