NEWTON COUNTY, Ind. — The only Fair Oaks Farm employee arrested in the case of animal abuse at the northern Indiana farm has been sentenced to probation.

Edgar Vazquez was in court Wednesday for an initial hearing, in which he pleaded guilty to lighter animal abuse charges as part of a plea deal. In return, prosecutors dropped more serious abuse charges that would have meant jail time.

In a video posted on the Internet by Animal Recovery Mission, Vasquez is one of several employees seen beating and force-feeding baby cows at Fair Oaks Farms in Newton County.

Two other workers identified in the video, Santiago Ruvalcaba Contreros, 31, and Miguel Angel Navarro Serrano, 38, have not been arrested and are still being looked for by investigators.

The owners of Fair Oaks Farms said they had no idea the abuse was going on and promised to take corrective measures to make sure it does not happen again.
