UPDATE:  Terre Haute Police now say that the item was a firework and the area is now open.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind – Around 9:00a.m. this morning Terre Haute Police were dispatched to the 600 block of Wabash Ave in reference to what was reported to be a hand grenade.

Officers blocked off the area.

Police say that from a distance the item does not appear to be real.

They are being cautious and following procedure and will keep the area secure until Indiana State Police Bomb Technicians can confirm the object is safe.
