Two-Way Street Proposal Tabled For Now

TERRE HAUTE, Ind – Some one-way streets in downtown Terre Haute will stay that way for a while longer.

On Monday, the city council’s Planning, Zoning and Improvements Committee agreed not to make a recommendation to the full council concerning Eighth, Ninth and Cherry streets.

A proposal by Councilman Todd Nation, D-4th, would have changed those one-way streets to two-way.

Several concerns have been brought up including the safety of motorists and pedestrians, including students at the university, and the maneuverability of city fire trucks and tractor-trailers serving businesses in the area.

As of now Cherry Street has been removed from the plan.

The rest of the proposal has been tabled until April.

On Thursday the City Council is expected to address a request to vacate one block of 8th Street from Wabash to Cherry to make way for the new convention center and a proposed hotel.
