Vigo County Still Has Teaching Positions To Fill

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – At Monday night’s Vigo County School board meeting the topic was the start of school and teaching positions that are still open.

The corporation has around 1,000 teachers on staff and there still a need for around 14 more teachers.

Teacher shortages are a problem not just here but around the county.

The biggest problem locally is the need for licensed teachers in areas like special education, business, language arts and some elementary positions.

If positions go unfilled, substitutes will be used to help fill the voids.

One area causing problems is the Indiana licensing exam.

It is a notoriously hard test to pass and can take as many as four or five attempts.

Locally Vigo County will continue to work with St. Mary of the Wood and Indiana State University and will also reach out to Ball State to bring in new student teachers that may want to stay.

Vigo County teachers are back in the schools today and students return to the classroom tomorrow,
