Vigo Jail Debate Continues

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – Vigo County Commissioners held their regular meeting Tuesday morning.

One major topic is the possible selection of the old International Paper property as a leading site for a new jail.

After much protest the commissioners had dropped that site back in May but now it’s back at the top of the list.

Several spoke against using that site for a jail at the meeting.

Council person Judy Anderson told News 10 that the property is not adjacent to the river which is not visible and the behind the property is the city’s storm water system.

She added that right now there is no planned development nearby but that there is already interest in the property and that in other communities there has been no problem with development near their jails.

Commissioners believe that they will not have to have the property rezoned.

They must present a timeline for the new jail to the court on October 15th.
