Terre Haute City Council Grants Abatement And Hears Proposal To Sell Utility

TERRE HAUTE, Ind – At Thursday evenings Terre Haute City Council meeting Paul Thrift of the Terre Haute Competes steering committee ask the council to consider privatizing the Terre Haute’s Wastewater Treatment Utility.

The public-private efficiency group that has studied the matter, believes that the time is right to consider the idea.

Thrift presented the council a copy of the group’s study that was first released in September.

He said that at least six “private sector parties” have expressed interest in operating the utility and added that the city can put conditions on any sale, including such things as rate caps, continued employment of current employees, union recognition and more.

Mayor Duke Bennett is forming a committee to investigate the proposal.

In other business the council approved a10-year real and personal property tax abatements for a $25 million expansion at Tredegar Film Products.

The company said that if the city did not approve the abatements that they could expand at other facilities elsewhere.
