TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – At a Tuesday afternoon press conference Terre Haute Police Chief John Plasse tried to provide more information on what happened at a standoff last week in the city.
Police say that Mikey Reynolds shot and killed Amanda Kerns and wounded Ronald Lawrence at a home on Putnam Street.
He then fled to a 1st Avenue home where he fired over 200 rounds at police.
Later that night Reynolds managed to slip by over 50 officers from the Terre Haute Police Tactical Unit by climbing out of a basement window that Plasse said was not covered.
Reynolds then crawled behind a privacy fence and through a neighbor’s yard to escape.
Reynolds went to the south side Wal-Mart and purchased a phone and other items and then went to a home on 4th Avenue.
By then the Indiana State Police SWAT team had relived city officers. They received a tip on Reynolds location and surrounded the house.
Reynolds came out of the house armed and threatened officers who then opened fire killing Reynolds.
The next door neighbor saw Reynolds escape but did not tell police until the next day after Reynolds was dead.
Chief Plasse said several times he was not making excuses for his department, and that he assumed full responsibility and was taking steps to make sure that something like this would not happen again.
Plasse said he expects more arrests to be made as the investigation continues.
