VIGO COUNTY, Ind – A public forum was held Thursday evening to discuss research being done on a new Vigo County Jail.

Nearly all the 150 or so people that attended agreed that a new jail was a necessity.

Dr. Kenneth Ray with RJS, the company hired by the county to study the need for a new jail:

Looked at how many beds we might need in a new jail : 18

And said that he is looking at roughly 462  but we aren’t that far from that now….:25

He said that we still have to look at what programs we might implement to reduce the jail population:  25

Ray said that we are only about half way through the project of determining exactly what we need to build and how we need to build it.

Other programs and options could affect the final bed count but Ray was fairly confident with the 462 number.

He also commented that the cost continues to increase the longer it takes to settle on a bed count and design.

He is encouraging everyone to get in touch with their elected officials to let them know your ideas.
