Brazil Man Arrested For Allegedly Trying To Steal Trailer

CLAY COUNTY, Ind – Indiana State Police say that since July 18th several burglaries, thefts, and sightings of suspicious people have occurred in and around the 7600 block of County Road 200 West and Summit Lawn Cemetery area.

Around 2:30 a.m. this past Sunday, July 29, a Trooper was parked in the area looking for activity when he noticed a gray Jeep emerge from the far west edge of the cemetery on a road clearly marked with no trespassing signs.

The Trooper stopped the an questioned the three people inside.

Police say that the trio had attempted to take a 5’ x 9’ single axle trailer that was parked at the rear of the cemetery in a wooded area and owned by the caretaker of the cemetery. One of the occupants, 23-year-old Drew M. Atkinson of Brazil, IN, had allegedly lied to the other two to try and get them to help.

Atkinson was arrested and taken to the Clay County Jail on preliminary charges of Attempted Theft, Escape, and Criminal Trespass.

While deputies were escorting him to the book-in process, Atkinson briefly escaped custody, but was quickly apprehended without incident.
