Vigo County Council Passes Two Tax Increases

VIGO COUNTY, Ind – It was standing room only Tuesday night for the Vigo County Council meeting.

So many attended that the number of attendees had to be counted to make sure that they did not exceed the room’s 350-person capacity.

The meeting lasted for nearly 5 hours and didn’t end until around 11p.m.

The council voted 5-2 to approve a county income tax hike from, 1.25 % to 2% that would be used in part to pay for a new jail.

Council members Aaron Loudermilk, Vicki Weger, Bill Thomas, Tim Curley, and Mike Morris voted in favor while Brendan Kearns and Jim Mann voted against.

The council also unanimously passed an increase in the county’s innkeeper’s tax.

The rate goes from 6.5% to 8%.

The additional money will allow the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau to meet its $5 million obligation toward the convention center project.
