TERRE HAUTE, Ind.  – The Terre Haute City Council met for a regular meeting last night and they talked about the plan for a new jail, the 2019 City Budget and pay increases for city employees.

Some Terre Haute city council members are not happy about the county commissioners and their selection of the old International Paper property which the county owns, as the site for the new jail.

The county attorney submitted a letter to council members that agreed to the mayor’s request for an outside legal opinion on the county’s request for a zoning variance on the property instead of a complete rezoning.

Also, last night the council unanimously approved the 2019 Terre Haute City Budget set at just over $93 million.

The mayor said this is the fourth straight year for a balanced budget.

Now the focus is on building cash reserves and reducing borrowing.

The city council also approved pay raises for city employees. This includes city hall employees and staff in the Parks, Transit, Streets, Cemetery, Wastewater, Police and Fire departments.

Elected officials like the mayor and council members will keep the same pay they had last year.
