Jail Zoning Big Topic At Council Meeting

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – At last night’s Terre Haute City Council meeting the council discussed and tabled a resolution concerning rezoning of the former International Paper property for a new county jail and sheriff’s department office.

Councilman Todd Nation says the county needs to request a rezoning of the property instead of a zoning variance.

The county owns the property, but it is within city limits.

Nation and Councilwoman Martha Crossen authored a resolution to tell county commissioners that they need to ask for a zoning change.

Some council members say they want to hear from a third lawyer, on just what should be done.

Councilman George Azar was quoted as saying that the whole process could wind up in a court battel between the city and county.
