Officers Identified In Fatal Shooting

VIGO COUNTY, Ind – Indiana State police have released the names of the Officers involved in a shooting that occurred in Terre Haute Tuesday Night.

Officers involved in the police action shooting were West Terre Haute Police Officer Caleb Talpas with 5 and half years of service, and Terre Haute Police Sergeant Justin Sears with 10 years of service.

The investigation is ongoing by Detectives from the Indiana State Police Putnamville Post. Once the ISP investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office for a full review.

On Tuesday evening around 10:30 West Terre Haute Police officer Talpas attempted to stop a pickup truck for failing to stop at a red light. The truck driver refused to stop.  Terre Haute Police Officer Sears heard the radio traffic and assisted with the pursuit.

The vehicle eventually pulled into a parking lot near 10 1/2 Street and Wabash Avenue. The suspect got out of the vehicle with a handgun and ignored several commands to drop the weapon.

The suspect raised the handgun and began firing at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was later identified as 24 year old David Frederick of Vincennes.

Troopers say that they have found that Frederick had recently expressed thoughts of suicide.
