Still No Place To Build The Jail

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. – An official location for a new Vigo County jail has yet to be decided, but officials are still looking.

Several sites have been looked at in the past few weeks.

Some known sites are still under consideration such as land along Springhill Drive, Haythorne  Avenue and the former Four Seasons Golf Course behind Honey Creek Mall.

Negotiations with land owners are ongoing.

Even though those sites are in the city limits, sites outside the city are also under consideration.

Many variables are being considered including ease of access and available infrastructure. All of which can be expensive to install if not already available.

Sites outside the city limits would eliminate zoning problems and the need to seek the cooperation of the city council.

In December, the Terre Haute City Council denied the county’s plans to rezone and build the new jail on the former International Paper Property on Prairieton Road.

County leaders now have until January 14th to report their progress in finding a new location to the court.
