TERRE HAUTE, Ind  – A Terre Haute couple accused of abusing a 14 month old child appeared in Vigo County Court Friday.

28 year old Holly Cota the young boy’s mother faces charges of Obstruction of Justice and Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

33 year old Scott Edwards, Cota’s boyfriend, faces charges of Aggravated Battery, Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury and Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Police say the child was in the care of Edwards when the child’s tongue was split most likely by scissors.

Investigators also say the child had several bruises and other injuries.

Edwards will stand trial in July while Cota will go to trial in June.
