INDIANAPOLIS — A proposal would make it easier for smaller political party candidates to get on the ballot in Indiana.

The bill backed by a legislative panel would change current law that requires parties to either have a candidate for Indiana secretary of state obtain 2 percent of the vote or collect that many petition signatures to be included on the November election ballot statewide.

The proposal lowers that vote requirement to 0.5 percent.
