CHICAGO, Ill  — A new proposal could permanently legalize medical marijuana in Illinois.

That proposal would also expand the state’s pilot program to include more conditions for which the drug could be prescribed.

Democratic Rep. Bob Morgan is sponsoring the bill that would add add those with conditions such as autism, migraines, osteoarthritis and chronic pain.

The program currently allows patients with about 40 serious medical conditions including cancer and AIDS to qualify for 2.5 ounces of marijuana every two weeks with doctor approval.

The program currently serves about 58,000 patients.
