Be On The Lookout For Storm Chasing Scammers

INDIANA – Scammers don’t rest, not even during a storm.

Director and Chief of Consumer Protection Betsy DeNardi is urging you to watch out for what she calls “Stormchasers,” scammers who prey on homeowners of houses damaged by storms.

DeNardi says Stormchasers approach storm-damaged homes, posing as repair companies. They’ll often show up unannounced to give you an estimate for service. More importantly, she says they’ll urge you to sign for the service immediately.

“If it’s a reputable business in Indianapolis, or in any other areas of the state, those businesses are not going to feel like they have to pressure you,” DeNardi said.

She also suggested if you allow a repair person into your home, that you follow them around your house. Scammers have been known to break items in homes, to create a reason for you to pay for service.

If you, or someone you know has fallen victim to a stormchaser scam, DeNardi said you should reach out to Consumer Protection. They’ll try to help you locate the business, and help you get your money back.

Regardless of whether a company aims to scam you, or not, it’s always a safe practice to research multiple repair companies to find the best match for you.
