INDIANAPOLIS–Pres. Trump told the near 80,000 people at the NRA Annual Meetings in downtown Indianapolis that in America, “We don’t believe in government. We believe it God.” His speech immediately followed one by Vice Pres. Pence, and opened the leadership conference, and the first day of the convention.

He used part of his speech to praise Indiana’s Congressional delegation, with most representatives and both Senators attending. Democrats Andre Carson and Pete Visclosky, and Republican Trey Hollingsworth, were not mentioned.

Trump made a point to point to the media and call them fake news, saying they refused to report on the economic success of the country under his administration.

His speech moved from Democrats and Congress to the economy and immigration. He came back to gun rights several times during the speech.

“Far left radicals in Congress want to take away your voice, your jobs, your rights and they especially want to take away your guns. You know that. They want to take away your guns,” said Trump. “You have socialists and far-left Democrats that want to destroy everything we’ve done.”

The president also urged the crowd to get out and vote.

“Everybody’s benefiting and jobs are benefiting. But, everything can be taken away when you start putting the wrong people in office.”

Trump warned that Democrats in Congress have moved on a plan to take away some kinds of guns, though he did not specify which plan he was talking about. Democrat Congressman Eric Swalwell, of California, has talked about a gun buy back.

“No more negotiating down on gun safety,” Tweeted Swalwell. “Mass shooting after mass shooting and Washington does nothing. Yet, Americans know what we should do. Be bold. Ban and buy back the assault weapons. Background checks. Gang violence prevention programs.”

“In recent days leading Democrats have proposed banning new guns and confiscating existing guns from law-abiding citizens,” said Trump. “What they don’t tell you is the bad guys aren’t giving up their guns and you’re not gonna be giving up your guns, either.”

Trump has supported early confiscation of guns from people who are mentally ill. He did not address that issue.

Trump also promised 400 miles of “the wall” will be built by next year.
