CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.–His job in education is not paying him enough money to support his family.

So now Andrew Evertts, a physical education teacher and basketball coach at North Montgomery High School, will be stepping away from that job at the end of the school year.

Evertts and his wife just had their first child, Jack, last summer. He says his salary was right around $38,000. He also got a stipend for coaching the basketball team. During the basketball the season, the hours got long. He says he worked around 80 hours a week, but says it’s not enough to raise a family. Evertts and his wife plan on having more children.

“I could kind of see this coming, but I had been thinking about this for a while,” Evertts told WISH-TV. “We’ve had some medical, minor issues with our son. He’s totally fine but you know medical stuff is really expensive. So because of that, we’ve had to make some decisions and honestly, we had to cash in retirement accounts and stuff like that and that’s when I thought this isn’t right. I’m probably not in the right career if I have to do stuff like that to support my family.”

Evertts posted a full statement on Twitter that said, “Although I have enjoyed coaching basketball more than I can put on paper, the unfortunate fact is that it does not pay the bills. My education salary is what supports my family, and at this point it is just not adequate for our needs. Again, I can’t stress enough that this is not a North Montgomery problem. In my 7 years in education the pay scales seem to get worse each year.”

Evertts’ wife still teaches art at both North Montgomery middle and high school. She will keep teaching. Evertts says the school district was understanding of the situation.

Right now, Evertts isn’t sure what he’ll do. He says since he made his announcement on social media, he’s gotten a lot of positive feedback and career opportunities.
