Indy Zoo Elephant Kedar Is Doing Well

INDIANAPOLIS – Good news for an elephant at the Indianapolis Zoo.

13-year-old Kedar is showing almost no signs of Elephant endotheliotropic herpesviruses, the Zoo said Tuesday.

Kedar recently tested positive for EEHV, which has killed two of the Zoo’s elephants so far this year.

EEHV is a type of herpesvirus which can cause fatal hemorrhagic diseases in Asian elephants like Kedar.

The Zoo says EEHV was detected in Kedar “extremely early” and he responded well to treatment.

Kedar is still recovering but is now allowed to spend time in the yard with other elephants in the herd.
