INDIANAPOLIS — Two tornadoes touched down in Marion County out of eight across Indiana Saturday, says the National Weather Service.

Both tornadoes hit the Beech Grove area on the south side of Indianapolis; one was an EF1 tornado and the other was an EF0. The tornadoes causes significant damage to several apartment buildings, houses, businesses, and even Beech Grove High School, according to Mayor Dennis Buckley.

“The newest edition to the high school is the science academy,” Buckley said. “That is the area that was destroyed.”

The strongest of the eight tornadoes were two EF2 tornadoes that touched down in the Ellettsville and Bloomfield areas.

Dianna Scroggins, who lives in Ellettsville, said she watched as the tornado swallowed barns and trees less than a quarter of a mile from her home.

“We saw it hit the neighbor’s barn and it just went ‘Pffft!’ and it disintegrated,” she said. “I saw sparks and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s going to be on fire.’ And then when it hit the other barn up here, the same thing. Just poof and it disintegrated.”

Tornadoes also hit Union County, Fayette County, and Wayne County, but the National Weather Service is unable to confirm their EF-classifications.
