COVINGTON, Ind –  The Southeast Fountain Community Foundation and the Vermillion County Community Foundation, affiliates of Western Indiana Community Foundation, recently awarded Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry $2,500 to be used to serve Fountain and Vermillion County residents.

Vermillion-Laura Hacquet, Office Assistant and Alan Mears, Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry Volunteer Regional Manager. SE Fountain-Kim Eaton, Finance & Operations Coordinator and Alan Mears, Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry Volunteer Regional Manager.

In a press release the group said that some think that hunger only affects the homeless or unemployed, but that is not the case. According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, a third of Indiana residents that work and who are still food insecure don’t qualify for food-assistance programs. These residents must turn to charitable food assistance networks such as food banks, pantries, hunger ministries, etc…

The hardest commodity for food banks to obtain is protein, which is an important component of every cell in the body and one of the most important nutrients for brain and body development in children.

Those affected by food insecurity are often at high-risk for obesity and diet-related diseases due to the lack of quality in the foods that they can afford.

“The $1,000 grant provided by the Vermillion County Community Foundation will pay to process about 820 pounds of donated large game and livestock – providing almost 3,300 more meals and the $1,500 given by the Southeast Fountain Community Foundation will process 1,250 pounds – providing almost 5,000 more meals through area hunger-relief agencies to residents in need within their communities,” said Debra Treesh, Executive Director of Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry.
