INDIANA – Certain felons can now collect food stamps.

On Jan. 1, SNAP, commonly known as food stamps, announced that people with felony drug convictions on their records were eligible for SNAP benefits.

Indiana was one of four states to permanently ban people with drug convictions from receiving benefits from SNAP. Now, instead of a lifetime ban, the law allows people who have successfully completed their sentence or are on probation, parole or community corrections to get SNAP benefits, said the Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly.

However, if a person violate the terms of their release their eligibility for the benefits is taken away.

The food stamps will allow them to buy most items at the grocery store like fresh and processed foods. They can’t use them to buy alcohol or tobacco products, vitamins and supplements, ready-to-eat hot foods, or non-food items like pet food, toiletries, make-up or other household items.

Around 258,000 Indiana households receive food stamps.
