The State Of Vigo County Schools

TERRE HAUTE, IN – The Vigo County School Corporation held a state of the schools presentation Thursday evening.

Superintendent Rob Haworth and several corporation administrators said that the school system is strong with many bright spots as well as challenges.

Haworth pointed to the faculty and staff that supply a quality learning environment. The system has over 1,000 teachers and more than 2,400 total employees that prepare lunches, drive the buses, maintain the facilities and more.

A key bright spot is the virtual school which is responsible for helping students succeed and bringing 40 new students to the corporation.

Still that system is getting smaller. Haworth pointed out that total enrollment has dropped below 14,000 for the first time and that means less money from the state. The corporation has lost 222 students in the past year which means a loss of $1.4 million in state funding.

Another big topic Thursday night was improvements that are needed at the three high schools.  A total of eight plans were presented that included fixing the three we have, building new schools and every combination of ideas in between.

Choosing a proper solution won’t be easy or cheap and will vary widely depending on what is decided, remodel the three high schools, tear some or all down and build new or remodel what we have.
