TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Terre Haute City Council voted Thursday night to table a proposed parking ordinance and place it on their agenda at the next meeting.

That ordinance would affect the Vigo County School Administration building and parking lot provided that the school corporation sells the property.

Selling the building is part of a cost cutting plan for the school corporation.

Proposed downtown convention center Exterior overhead view of the project block. 7th St. left, Wabash Ave bottom, 9th St right, Cherry St top.  Parking garage that is being deleted would be in the upper left corner of the drawing.

There was a second parking garage planned for the new downtown convention center, but the cost was more than expected now the Capital Improvement Board has expressing interest in buying the school corporation building and making it a parking lot.

About a month ago Councilman Todd Nation filed an ordinance that would restrict placing a surface parking lot at the Crossroads of America at 7th and Wabash Ave.

Those against the parking lot believe that there are better uses for that prime piece of downtown real estate.

Wednesday night the Vigo County Area Planning Commission passed the ordinance to the council with an unfavorable recommendation which is non-binding.

The next city council meeting will be on March 5th. The council said they want to give all parties enough time to get their thoughts together when it comes to this issue.
