JASPER, Ind. — Suicide rates are on the rise nationwide, and here in the Hoosier State.

“Our suicide rate has gone up for over 20 years now,” says Janet Schnell from Survivors of Suicide Dubois County.

She believes it’s a financial issue in smaller communities.

“People are not making enough money to afford treatment,” Schnell said. “That’s one of the very basic concepts that we have noticed. If there was an increase in wage, people would be able to afford extra services like getting therapy when they’re having thoughts of suicide.”

If you’re in need to help, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-(800) 273-8255.
