State Lawmakers May Require Seniors To Fill Out A FAFSA

INDIANAPOLIS – Time is running out for a proposal to make all high school seniors fill out the financial aid form for college.

The Indiana Chamber is among those arguing that if the financial aid form is required, it’ll make students at least think about college instead of just assuming they can’t afford it. But the Indiana Association of School Principals and some House Republicans argue requiring the form would create one more burden for schools, for something which should be parents’ responsibility.

The Senate passed the bill 38-12, but the House has killed two separate attempts to get it to the floor over unrelated issues. It can still be added to another education bill in the final week of the session, but House Education Chairman Robert Behning (R-Indianapolis) says he’s still trying to line up the votes for it.
