Avon Community Schools Close After Second Student Tests Positive For Coronavirus

AVON, Ind. — All schools in Avon Community School District will be closed for two weeks after officials said a second child was showing symptoms of the coronavirus on Monday.

On Sunday, the district said a child who attends Hickory Elementary School tested positive for the virus.

Superintendent Maggie Hoernemann said that the district was working to determine who else could be affected.

All 12 district schools will be closed until the end of spring break which ends April 3.

The school will have e-learning, and families can request a learning packet as an alternative. The school will also be offering cold meal packages that include 10 breakfast, lunches and meals for families that rely on the schools for that.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box said that three adults and one child have tested positive for coronavirus so far.

The first person who tested positive was someone in Marion County, who traveled to Boston for a BioGen conference. The second person infected was from Hendricks County. The third infected the child from Avon, and the fourth was announced on Monday as a person from Noble County.
