CORYDON, Ind. — Imagine finding out you need a new kidney. You find a match, and you’re supposed to have the transplant surgery this week, but now you can’t because of the coronavirus.

That’s the roller coaster of emotions Chase Best has gone through the last few weeks.

“Monday, we got a call from the transplant team, saying they had to postpone it,” Best told WHAS 11 in Louisville.

Best is a basketball coach at Corydon Central High School. Three weeks ago, he was surprised during halftime of a game, when Jake Yonkers, an old baseball coach, told him he was a match and was going to give Best his kidney.

That surgery was supposed to happen on Tuesday.

“I think it was a combination of a lot of things,” Best said. “For one, my health, you know, after the transplant. But also because of the resources that aren’t available now.”

Best says he isn’t sure how long the surgery will have to be postponed, but is trying to remain positive.

“We still have our donor, thankfully. You know, Jake is still there for us,” he said. “It’s going to happen, it’s just, you know, when is it going to happen? That’s the frustrating part.”
