PARKE COUNTY, Ind – The Parke County Election Board is strongly encouraging people to vote by mail. Doing so will help keep voters and election staff safe during the coronavirus crisis. The courthouse is currently open for business, but public access is limited. All public testing of voting machines is delayed.

Gov. Eric Holcomb has moved the 2020 primary election from May 5 to June 2.

All deadlines would be moved forward 28 days for the June 2 primary. Everyone would have the option to mail in ballots.

To vote at home using an absentee ballot complete an application and submit it to the Parke County Election Board via the County Clerk’s office before the deadline. After you receive your absentee ballot, fill it out and get it to the Election Board office no later than noon on Election Day. It is preferable that it be mailed, e-mailed, or faxed. Applications and ballots received after the deadline cannot be processed (even if postmarked by the deadline). Those voting absentee- by-mail are NOT required to show photo ID.

In addition to signing the executive order to delay the election, Holcomb had these recommendations for the Indiana Election Commission:

 Suspend absentee by-mail rules to allow all Hoosiers the option to vote by mail in the upcoming primary election

 Allow county clerks to continually mail ballots from now through 12 days out from the new primary election date

 Confirm ballots with a May 5, 2020 date will be valid

 Enable medical professionals to be eligible members of traveling boards to vote nursing home and hospital patients

 Give family members the ability to deliver absentee ballots. Currently only a member of a voter’s household may take possession of their ballot

The Election Commission will meet Wednesday to formalize the recommendations from the governor and the secretary of state.
