William Robert Long, Jr, 71 of Terre Haute, passed away unexpectedly March 30, 2020, at his residence. He was born in Vigo County, the son of William Robert Long, Sr. (Bill) and Dorothy Madelyn DeDomenico Long.
He enlisted in the Indiana National Guard and was declared an Officer and a Gentlemen by Act of Congress in 1970. He rose to the rank of Captain and served 10 years as Company Commander of Supply Company in Greencastle, IN.
He married Jane Myers on July 5, 1969. They were both graduates of the one hundredth Wiley Class of 1966. He attended Indiana State University and was an I-Man in baseball in his freshman, sophomore, and junior years.
He left ISU before his professional teaching semester to join the Penn Central Railroad and to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s (Joe) footsteps; both men were Pennsylvania RR prior right men.
Bob loved all sports and was a proud member of Post 346 American Legion baseball team. He was a member of Cardinal Nation but loved the N.Y. Yankees, too. He supported Miss America Softball and Vigo Co. Youth Soccer and many travel teams as a mentor, umpire, and coach.
Bob is survived by his wife Jane, his step-mother, Rita Long, his Aunt Nancy Coughlin (Neal), his daughters, Sarah Jane Patterson and Jocelyn Marie Long (her beau Jason); 3 grandchildren, Haley Jane Corthum, Goldin Karl Patterson, Anneliese Patterson and two great-grandchildren.
He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, the United Trainmen Union, the Sycamore Country Club, American Legion Post 104, and the Silent Men.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mass of Christian Burial and graveside services will be postponed until our community is clear. A Celebration of Bob’s life will immediately proceed at the Sycamore Club, following the Mass. Contributions may be made to Silent Men or Terre Haute Humane Shelter.
Greiner Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements. To plant a tree in memory of William Robert Long Jr., please visit the tribute store.
